Sunset on the Tamar

So, my generous friend with the boat said ‘we have done sunrise, how about sunset?’ and the tide was good so off we went! The sky was just right, the water was very dirty but that added to it! Then as we got to the time of pink clouds and orange skies the sun was fronted by thick gray clouds – never mind – some of the water and reflections are fun!! Is Photography Art?

With an exhibition coming up I had been thinking about what I produced. Yes, some great macro flowers in the studio; yes, some pretty good land/water scapes; but what was my USP? I have been working with a film maker combining film and images, so thought I why not combine images? So with some experimenting here are the first four. Look carefully as at first sight most people miss some of the content; a clue is in the title! Also, the thumbnails cut off some of the image so click on the image and then again!!

Hightide and Sunrise on the Tamar

A very early start and early mist flowing down the Tamar. A friend said how about just catching the spring tide for an hour or two. So off we went (not been up that early for ages!), nearly wet feet getting to the dingy, but fantastic light and drifting mist. The tide dropped several feet before we returned for a splendid breakfast!! lots more at www.flickr.com/photos/reflexrover/sets/72157627421331509/

Infra Red

I discovered that my spare DSLR is IR complient so ordered a cheap Infra Red Filter from China – it arrived in a few days and as it was a dull day I thought ‘why not?’ so I did!! And these are the results with a little desaturation on the gray ones. It seems as if getting the white balance is the hardest part, and not being able to see anything through the lense, and having to guess the exposure as the meter is not claibrated for IR!! I shall do more of these as they are fun even though they look like slightly strange black and white prints!

Outdoors and in

With mixed weather this week I have been picking single flowers from the garden, and photographing them in the studio. Also been on a couple of walks in and out of woods and along the river Tamar with the sun spotighting a field and a tower. A mix of straight mast and bendy tree with white daisies below was a nice challenge. Into the woods and the Anti vibration mechanism on the new lens worked well plus for a change I uped the ISO to 500 with hardly any degrdation! More at Flickr

Triple Wammy!

Todays post has three sections. I have been trying to use what facilities I have – lenses, weather and more – I live at the top of a hill with nothing higher than us to the North Atlantic – another way of saying that it is WINDY! I often say, ‘can’t photograph today as it is too windy’, so to counteract that and with the aid of a variable Neutral Density filter and flash gun or multiple exposure I have tried to counter the wind. Secondly whilst waiting for a new zoom I have been making myself use prime lenses for everything which has proved a good relearning curve! Finally the new Nikon 28 – 300 arrived; meant for travel use when I need to change from zoom to wide angle quickly it was fun to just go for a walk to see what it would do and it is wonderful – heavy as it is a FX lens and solid with crisp optics. A few more Flowers

I have bee uploading onto Flickr – Roses have got great acceptance from Princes Grace Rose Garden Group! Any way, I have been trying to work out what to do lens wize as my 18 – 200 is not doing what I want and so I have been only using prime (none variable) lenses – quite a challenge but FUN! I grew the Arum Lily, it was a very late planting and has done better than the first one I grew!

A busy few days!

There are three selections this week! Some flowers in situ in the garden, always a challange as I don’t get up early enough! A poppy in the studio – these grow wild on my partners allotment and then a few from my Friday morning walk – sadley these have identified a problem in my universal 18 – 200 lens and the auto focusing together with a couple of other probems – I can’t decide whether to buy a new one, the 28 – 300 or a 300 prime – the question is convinience!! The Sun has got his hat on ………….

Given the weather, most of my work recently has been in the studio, but, today the sun has come out and I went out into the garden! I did take a white geranium to the studio! Most were taken in early afternoon light and are a bit flat but the strength of the light was just so wonderful!!
